NARVA COLLEGE OF TARTU UNIVERSITY

In 2011 we did concrete work on new building of Narva College of Tartu University.

We had the task to build facade from white concrete. By architects' vision the new facade must be like negative copy of the historic (built in 18. Century) marketbuilding facade, that was burned down in II. World War.

The concrete quality requirements were extremely high: class AA surface, without changing of color, cracks and other surface damages. All concrete surfaces are visible, no plaster or paintwork is planned. No tolerances are allowed on straight surface.

Using of stainless (or galvanized) steel prevent the formation of rust on the surface of concrete. The thickness of concrete construction was up to 530mm, and the height of wall was 3 meter. That means extremly high requirements to the strength of the formwork.

For a moment, when the concrete arrives the object, a long preparatory work has been made: customized shapes from plywood are installed, difficult reinforcement is ready... Concrete was supplied from Tallinn (180 km from Narva), because it is not a usual material, it include marble rubble and mixing of them is a real kind of art.

Below are highlighted the images of building process. All the design elements, including arches, pilasters, rosettes, lock blocks, must been early installed in more than 3 m high formwork. Positioning of them was really fine work.
